India Hosts Virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : On 16th October 2020, India hosted the virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, SCO.
Ministers of Justice from SCO Member States, Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad mentioned about Pro Bono Legal Services to provide free legal aid to marginalized sections of the society.
Mr Prasad highlighted that through Tele-Law services initiated in 2017, so far over three lakh 44 thousand free legal consultations have been given to poor people through video conference.
As part of activities of Justice Ministers’ Forum, the Minister urged SCO Member States to promote exchange of ideas, best practices and experiences in identified areas through the platform.
SCO is an intergovernmental organization founded in Shanghai on 15 June 2001. The SCO currently comprises eight Member States (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), four Observer States interested in acceding to full membership (Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, and Mongolia) and six “Dialogue Partners” (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey).
Since its inception in 2001, the SCO has mainly focused on regional security issues, its fight against regional terrorism, ethnic separatism and religious extremism.
NS Tomar virtually inaugurates the India – International Food & Agri Week
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Ministry of Fisheries & Animal Husbandry & Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, is organizing its first ever Virtual CII Agro & Food Tech : India – International Food & Agri Week scheduled on 16 – 22 October 2020.
On 16.10.2020, Food Processing Industries Minister Narendra Singh Tomar virtually inaugurated the India – International Food and Agri Week.
Minister said Indian food processing sector is 32% of India’s food market.
Mr Tomar said, the Ministry has started an awareness campaign named ‘Anna Devo Bhava’ to mark this occasion. He stressed that along with increasing awareness about the value of food we must also focus on reducing food wastage.
He said the focus of the agro and food tech is on the use of technology in the field of food and agriculture sector to increase the income of farmers and is in line with the goal set by the Prime Minister to double the income of farmers by 2022.
Nitin Gadkari inaugurates, lays foundation stones for 16 NH projects in Andhra Pradesh
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : On 16th Oct 2020, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 16 National Highways projects in Andhra Pradesh.
The total length of the road is one thousand 411 kilometre. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gadkari said that the length of National Highways in Andhra Pradesh before May 2014 was four thousand 193 Kilometre, which has now increased to six thousand 860 Kilometre.
There has been increase of 64 per cent in National Highway length during past 6 years.
The Minister informed that five thousand Kilometre of National Highways are being developed as a part of Bharatmala Pariyojana in the State. In addition, 400 Kilometre of port connectivity roads will also be developed under Bharatmala Pariyojana.
Intellectual Property India Report 2018-19 – Chandigarh University bags First Rank
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : Chandigarh University Gharuan has emerged as Top Stand-Alone University in India for filling highest number of patents in a year, i.e. 336.
The annual rankings for the year 2018-19 was recently released by Office of Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Government of India which comprises of Academic Institutions and Multinational Companies.
As per the report “the overall patents filing category, 27 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT’s) have collectively filed 557 patents and are leading the table but with 336 patents filed in a year, Chandigarh University Gharuan has emerged as the leading stand-alone institution to file highest number of patents which is followed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) with 239 patent applications,.
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – 202 applications
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) – 173 applications.
India contributes 1 million dollars to UNRWA for Palestine Refugees
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : India has contributed one million dollars to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in Near East.
This aid will support the Agency’s programmes and services, including education, health care, relief and social services.
The Representative Office of India in Ramallah said, India’s support for the Palestinian cause is an integral part of the nation’s foreign policy. It shall continue supporting the UNRWA’s activities in providing vital services and necessary humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees.
Sixth Session of the India-Norway JCM Held virtually
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : The sixth-session of the India-Norway Joint Commission Meeting was held virtually on October 13, 2020. The meeting was attended by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Norwegian counterpart Ine Eriksen Soreide.
During the virtual meeting, both sides highlighted various issues, the establishment of the COVAX global facility, Maternal and Child health, aquaculture, fisheries, green technologies for maritime use, ship recycling, construction of vessels, and green ports.

J&K announced ‘My Town My pride’ program
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : On 15.10.2020 Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha announced the ‘My Town My Pride’ programme, starting from October 19, as a part of the public outreach initiative ‘in J&K’s towns to deliver services at doorsteps to the urban population”.
Nagaland Minister for Health & Family Welfare launches handbook on “TB Harega, Desh Jeetega”
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : In line with the government’s commitment to end Tuberculosis by 2025 in the country, Nagaland Minister for Health and Family Welfare , Mr. S. Pangnyu Phom on 16.10.2020 launched a handbook on “TB Harega, Desh Jeetega” .
AIM : To proactively engage more elected representatives such as MLAs, members of Zila Parishad, VDB members and Gram Panchayat or Gram Sabha to help address social stigma as well as to promote advocacy and community involvement in TB programme.
Punjab Cabinet approved Dr BR Ambedkar SC Post Matric Scholarship Scheme
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : On 14th Oct 2020, The Punjab Cabinet has approved the Dr BR Ambedkar SC Post Matric Scholarship Scheme in place of the Centre’s defunct scheme, in order to facilitate Scheduled Caste (SC) students to pursue higher education in both private/public institutions for academic year 2021-22.
CM of Punjab also announced the increase in income criteria for availing scheme to 4 lakh, earlier it was 2.5 lakh.
Andhra Pradesh: Kanaka Durga & Benz Circle flyovers open for general traffic
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : In Andhra Pradesh, the much-awaited Kanaka Durga and Benz Circle Flyovers have been opened for general traffic on 16.10.2020.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari along with Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, General (Retd) V. K. Singh and Union Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the Kanaka Durga and Benz Circle Flyovers virtually.
Later, they inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 61 projects worth 15,591 crore rupees. The inauguration of the fly over was postponed twice earlier.
The 2.6-kilometre long flyover has been built at an estimated cost of 502 crore rupees along National Highway 65, which links Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

Indian Bank inks MoU with MoHUA, SIDBI to deliver subsidy under PM SVANidhi
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : Indian Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for payment of subsidy to street vendors under the Centre’s SVANidhi Scheme.
“Indian Bank has developed an integrated online system to make payments of interest subvention and cash incentives to all street vendor-beneficiaries across the country through the Direct Benefit Transfer.”
Central Govt had launched the PM SVANidhi scheme on 1 June 2020 aimed to help poor street vendors who are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and to help them resume livelihood activities.
PFC and JKPCL signed and exchanged an agreement for Liquidity Infusion Scheme under “Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan” for the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : Government-owned Power Finance Corporation Ltd (PFC), India’s leading NBFC, has sanctioned Rs 2790 crore to Jammu Kashmir Power Corporation ltd (JKPCL) for clearing its outstanding dues.
On 16.10.2020, PFC and JKPCL signed and exchanged an agreement for Liquidity Infusion Scheme under “Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan” for the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. The money sanctioned under the scheme will be used to clear the outstanding dues of CPSU, GENCOs & TRANSCOs, IPPs and RE Generators on 31st March 2020.
In May, the government announced a Rs 90,000 crore liquidity infusion for discoms under which these utilities would get loans at economical rates from PFC and REC. This was an initiative of the government to help gencos to remain afloat. Later, the liquidity infusion package was increased to Rs 1.2 lakh crore.
Centre to borrow Rs 1.10 lakh crore on behalf of states to meet GST shortfall
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : The Finance Ministry has said that the Centre will borrow up to 1.10 lakh crore rupees on behalf of the states to bridge the shortfall in GST collections.
In a statement, the Ministry said, the amount so borrowed will be passed on to the states as a back-to-back loan in lieu of GST compensation cess releases. It said, the borrowing will not have any impact on the fiscal deficit of the Government of India. It added that the amounts will be reflected as the capital receipts of the state governments and as part of the financing of its fiscal deficits.
The Ministry said, it will avoid differential rates of interest that individual States may be charged for their State Development Loans and will be an administratively easier arrangement.
It also clarified that the general Government borrowings will not increase by this step. It said, the States that get the benefit from the ‘Special Window’ are likely to borrow a considerably lesser amount from the additional borrowing facility of 2 per cent of Gross State Domestic Product under Aatma Nirbhar Package.
India’s first Oscar winner Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya passes away
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner, died on 15.10.2020 after prolonged illness, her daughter said. She was 91.
Ms. Athaiya, who won an Oscar for her work in the 1983 epic film Gandhi.
Jnanpith Awardee Malayalam poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri passed away
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : Renowned Malayalam poet and Jnanpith laureate ‘Mahakavi’ Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri died on 15.10.200. He was 94.
Union Minister Youth and Sports Shri Kiren Rijiju addresses Y20 Global Summit
Current Affairs 16 October 2020 : Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports ShriKirenRijiju represented India in the Y20 Global Summit on October 15, 2020, aimed at exchanging ideas and dialogues between nations to empower the youth across the world.
ShriRijiju stressed upon the need to galvanise the youth to take on the challenges set forth by the worldwide Covid 19 Pandemic. Sharing India’s experience, ShriRijiju said, “As a country with a large youth population, India has proactively engaged its youth during the Covid pandemic with more than 6.5 million youth volunteers of the Ministry of Youth Affairs working in the frontline to create awareness among the masses. Covid has thrown unprecedented challenges at us and it is the vision of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi that the youth must be engaged in volunteerism, and within the next few months India will have about 10 million volunteers who will work further towards addressing post Covid challenges.”
